Report from the 111th FAI General Conference
The sessions of the 111th FAI General Conference were held at the Royal Savoy Hotel in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 26 and 27 October 2017.
More than 100 delegates from Active, Associate Member Countries and International Affiliate Members were present, as well as FAI elected Officers, Presidents of Honour, Companions of Honour, delegates appointed by Presidents of Commissions and Observers.
The General Conference was officially opened on Wednesday 25 October during a ceremony where FAI Awards and Diplomas were presented by the President Frits Brink.
The Awards Ceremony was graced by the presence of high-profile personalities such as Dr Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Bertrand Piccard, FAI Honorary Patron and CEO, pilot and co-founder of Solar Impulse.
Several guest speakers had an opportunity to take the stage and present their organisations or projects to the Delegates. They included Erich Wolf from Red Bull Air Race, Yuriy Letser from Noosphere and Deputy Ambassador of Egypt to Switzerland Magdi El Derini, as host of next year’s Conference.
1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships
The organisation of the 1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships was awarded to Shenzhen, China. The competition will take place in the first half of November 2018.
Future General Conferences
The Delegates voted in favour of the bid by Morocco to host the 113th FAI General Conference in Marrakech in 2019.
The next FAI General Conference will take place on 26 and 27 October 2018 in Luxor, Egypt.
